Suspect has federal fraud conviction
A concert promoter has been charged with using a bad check to pay the Steve Miller Band for the group's show in Casper last fall.
Police suspect Robert Alfred Green, 48, never had the money in his bank account to cover a $90,600 check he wrote to the band for performing at the Casper Events Center on Nov. 2.
Green appeared in Natrona County Circuit Court on Thursday, when a judge ruled enough evidence exists for the Scottsdale, Ariz. man to stand trial on a single count of check fraud. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years behind bars.
Attorney Nicholas Carter, who represents Green, did not respond to a message left Friday at his Gillette office.
Green agreed to travel to Wyoming from Arizona just over a week ago for the proceedings, Natrona County District Attorney Michael Blonigen said.
Police began to investigate Green in May after a band representative contacted police to report the concert promoter's check didn't clear due to insufficient funds. The check was written on Green's personal account and given to the band while they were in Casper, police say.
Green spoke with a detective in June and admitted he didn't have enough money in his account to cover the check at the time he wrote it, according to an affidavit written by the officer. He also claimed the band's agent said he would hold onto the check until there were sufficient funds in the account.
Band representatives denied those claims, police said.
Investigators believe Green wired money related to the concert -- including $56,000 from the events center -- into his checking account in early November. However, they suspect he quickly moved the money from that account before traveling to Mexico for a vacation.
"At no time was there a sufficient balance in the account to cause the check ... to clear," Detective Chris Williams wrote in the affidavit.
Green was on supervised release for a federal mail fraud conviction at the time of the alleged offense, according to documents filed in the U.S. District Court for Arizona.
He was convicted in 2007 of running an illegal money-making scheme while selling used cars in Scottsdale. According to a copy of the plea deal Green made with federal prosecutors, he defrauded a used car dealer by sending him bad checks.
In June, federal prosecutors asked a judge to revoke Green's supervised release after his probation officer accused him of traveling abroad without permission and lying about making restitution payments.
The Steve Miller Band has produced several hit songs including "The Joker," "Take the Money and Run," and "Fly Like and Eagle."
