Reading outside the box

How can avid readers broaden their horizons? Each year, NCPL hosts a reading and discussion series in conjunction with the Wyoming Humanities Council's " Reading Wyoming" program. In the past, readers in attendance have explored spine-tingling mysteries, Pulitzer-Prize winners, and the role of community in a contemporary western landscape.

This year, readers will enjoy the topic "Distant Neighbors: Twentieth-Century Mexican Literature." Mexico's twentieth-century literature reflects the effort to forge a new national culture in the wake of the Mexican Revolution, according the WCH. Tammy Frankland of Casper College will facilitate each discussion.

All discussions will begin at 7 p.m. Interested readers can pick up a book or flyer at the library's Reference Desk on the second floor.

"Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel will be the topic of tonight's discussion. Youngest daughter Tita falls in love, but knows her duty is to remain single and care for her mother. Tita's cooking plays a central role in this mystical romance. The final book in the series is "Hectic Ethics" by Francisco Hinojosa, a collection of stories to be discussed April 24. Many of these stories deal with the spirals of life, especially those that tend downward.

Reading Wyoming provides reading and discussion series to nonprofit organizations around the state and is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. For more information on the council's programs, call 307-721-9243 or visit the council's Web site at {M7www.uwyo.edu/humanities.

Women hear food ideas

Easter and Spring activities will soon be arriving and with busy schedules, time to prepare family dinner is limited. Need help? Ladies of the Petroleum Club meet at noon today. Brenda Hurless of My 2nd Kitchen will inform us what her new business offers, from presenting a monthly menu to assembling your prepared food to your liking. This is great for summer "drop-in" guests. To make a reservation, call Vera Cooper at 235-6446. If you made a reservation and are unable to attend, please call the club to cancel.
