10 men, 5 women make up panel in Rolle trial
Donald Rolle showed little emotion Friday as Judge Thomas Sullins announced the 10 men and five women selected to serve as jurors and alternate jurors in his trial.
Rolle, 47, is charged with murdering Jennifer Randel, a 40-year-old Casper woman whose body was found Nov. 4 in a rural area west of Casper.
Attorneys will present their opening arguments at 9 a.m. on Monday in Natrona County District Court. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Rolle, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The final jury selection was made Friday afternoon, after 45 prospective jurors spent the majority of the week in group sessions, and all day Thursday in individual, closed-court interviews.
Ultimately, 12 jurors and three alternates will be selected from the initial 15 members chosen.
Jurors are required to avoid discussing the case, which includes reading, listening to or watching related media reports.
On Friday, Sullins also asked jurors to also avoid learning more about certain locations in the case, at the request of attorneys.
Prosecutors have asked the judge to allow jurors to visit three sites near the area where Randel's body was found. The area is about four miles west of Poison Spider School.
Sullins has not yet made a ruling on that request.
"No investigations," Sullins instructed the jurors, "nothing where you should be going out and attempting to look at areas that may be involved with this case."
The trial begins a little more than 10 months after Randel's death. On Nov. 3, 2007, a person who identified herself as Randel called 911 to say she was being held against her will in a red pickup. Authorities traced the call to the area of 7 Mile and Poison Spider roads. A search that night failed to turn up the truck.
Earlier that evening, Randel and Rolle were seen together at Butch's Bar in Evansville, according to investigators.
The next day, officers received a report of a red pickup stuck in a ditch near Canal Road, a hilly area about four miles west of Poison Spider School. When they arrived, they allegedly found Rolle standing outside the truck.
After Rolle was taken into custody, officers found Randel's body in the truck. Authorities say Randel had been beaten and stabbed.
The trial is expected to last three to four weeks.
