This weekend offers a selection of meaningful events for the more active among us, as well as at least two opportunities to really experience a sampling of Old West culture.
Friends of the late Diane DeBoer have organized a walk-run this morning on the beautiful pathway surrounding the Three Crowns Golf Course. DeBoer supported the Casper Humane Society so the $15 registration fee goes directly to that group. Families are welcome to walk or run at their leisure. The walk begins at the Old Amoco building (west of the Oil & Gas Commission Building). Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the walk/run starts at 9 a.m.
The Climb to Conquer Cancer is a unique, noncompetitive walk to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer on Muddy Mountain. Participants will walk five miles up Muddy Mountain Road. Walkers will be greeted on top of the mountain by a Luau, lunch and live entertainment at Lodgepole Campground. There will be games, a luau costume contest and hula lessons, drawings and much more. Don't forget your pup, they wouldn't want to miss out on fun and prizes for them as well! Registration fee is $40 per person to benefit the American Cancer Society.
On Sunday, The Red Cross Casper Mountain Bike Festival begins at 10 a.m., at the Trail Center on Casper Mountain. Racers and spectators both are welcome. Lunch is served from noon to 3 p.m. Races take place from noon to 2 p.m. Awards and door prizes for all will be awarded at 3 p.m. Take a break and see mountain bike films in the lodge from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Live music features the Chasers. Racers are $25; under 12, $15; non-racers for lunch and prizes is $10. The event is a fund-raiser for the Natrona County branch of the American Red Cross.
Limited tickets may still be available for the first "Roaming Wyoming," fund-raiser for Central Wyoming Hospice and Transitions tonight at Diemer and Susie True's big red barn, 6000 S. Poplar St., from 5-9 p.m. Any remaining tickets at $60 each or two for $100 will be sold at the gate on S. Poplar St., which is south of the Wyoming Boulevard intersection, at the two yellow brick driveway gates.
In addition to a Wyoming buffet dinner, guests will be treated to team roping, branding and other Wyoming activities.
All live auction and raffle prizes are Wyoming adventures, ranging from golf and fishing to flying and branding.
Proceeds up to $25,000 will be matched by the McMurry Foundation.
For a more rustic step back in time, join the Deer Creek Homemakers Club at a box social and dance to celebrate the Town of Glenrock's 100th anniversary. There is a $5 admission for the dance with the Jim Trantham Band if you don't take a decorated box lunch for two to share with the winning bidder. Festivities begin at 6 p.m., and the dance starts about 7:30 p.m.
To reach the hall, take the Glenrock exit 165 off I-25, turn south toward the mountains on Deer Creek Road and continue exactly 6.2 miles. The hall is at the end of the pavement on your left.
Other weekend events include today's fifth annual Paradise Valley Neighborhood Garage Sale, beginning at 8 a.m. Participant maps are available at 201 Honeysuckle St.
Sunrise Baptist Church will be conducting a bake sale at the eastside Wal-Mart, beginning at 9 a.m. today. All proceeds will go towards a medical mission trip to Nicaragua this August.
The Casper area Girl Scouts are hosting a rummage sale in July to benefit local troops. They are seeking donations of gently used household items and asking community members to come by and shop. Donations will be taken today from noon-4 p.m. at the Casper Girl Scout House, 1011 Bonnie Brae.
Casper Amateur Radio operators will work 'round the clock to set up field radio communication stations, get on the air, and contact thousands of other operators in the US and Canada as part of participation in the American Radio Relay League's annual Field Day. Licensed amateur radio operators in greater Casper and the interested public will gather at the Kelly Walsh High School practice football field from noon today to noon on Sunday.
The Casper Planetarium, 904 N. Poplar St., offers three programs daily:
11 a.m.: Secret of the Cardboard Rocket; 7 p.m.: Astromyths and 8 p.m., Black Holes.
Morning shows are recommended for families with children 3 and up. Evening shows are recommended for families with children 6 and up due to technical material. Admission is $2.50 per person per show. For more information, call 577-0310.
On Sunday, First Christian Church of Casper, 520 CY Ave., will officially install Rev. Cynthia Dobson McBride, previously of Normal, Ill., as its Lead Pastor at 3 p.m. at First Christian Church. A reception in the church's Fellowship Hall will follow the installation. All who attend the installation ceremony are welcome to attend the reception as well.
Also on Sunday, the annual Charity Challenge Shoot between the Lawdogs (Natrona County law enforcement officers) and the Cowboys (cowboy single-action shooters) starts at 11 a.m. Shooter's fee is $12 and all are welcome. Hosted by the Bessemer Vigilance Committee. Spectators welcome as well. Proceeds go to the 4-H Shooting Sports program. For more information, call Dave Kinghorn at 235-9282; Ben Britton at 235-9282; or Richie Randell at 235-8278.
