Walk to School Day is Wednesday

Child safety advocates at Safe Kids of Central Wyoming, the Wyoming Department of Transportation, city of Casper employees, along with law enforcement and fire and emergency services, are hosting activities in conjunction with Wednesday's International Walk To School Day.

"Pedestrian safety is a concern in our community and our hope is that we can teach children to be safer pedestrians in a way they will remember for years to come," said Diane Guerttman, Safe Kids of Central Wyoming coordinator, in a release.

St. Anthony Parish School will hold a "Walk to School" assembly at 2:30 p.m. today, and Cresthill Elementary will do the same at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

Fort Caspar opens new exhibit

Fort Caspar Museum will open a new traveling exhibit - "A View from Center Street" - today, according to a release. The exhibit, from the Wyoming State Museum, includes Thomas Carrigen's images of Casper and its residents from the 1920s through the 1950s and will be open through Nov. 30.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, Heyward Schrock will discuss the exhibit. The program will examine the past cultural landscape of Casper using the Carrigen's collection from the Wyoming State Archives & Museum.

The presentation is free with admission. Adults are $1.50, youth 13-18 are $1.00 and children 12 and under are free.

Energy series opens with solar

The Natrona County Public Library is offering a series of lectures on solar and wind power for homes and businesses, according to a release.

The first session, "Grid-tied Solar Electric Systems," is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday in the library's Crawford Room. Deb and Gene Theriault of Sun Power Energy will speak at the workshop.

The second session, which will explain off-grid solar for locations where utility electricity is not available, is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 30.

Hospice seeks Fun Fest photos

A digital camera with prized images from Central Wyoming Hospice & Transitions' Family Fun Festival on Sept. 20 use was never returned.

Officials are requesting people who attended the event share their photos with the hospice for future use.

Three teachers receive OfficeMax award

Three Natrona County School District teachers were presented with OfficeMax's "A Day Made Better" awards: Willard Elementary's Chris Hendrickson, Dean Morgan Junior High's Michelle Onstott, and CY Junior High's Tanya Smith, according to a release from the school district.

The program recognizes teachers for the effort they put into their classrooms. The company estimates that teachers spend about $1,200 of their own money each year to meet the needs of their students.

OfficeMax will donate school supplies worth more than $1 million to schools across the country on behalf of the winning teachers.

Rec seeks volunteers for carnival

The Casper Recreation Division is seeking volunteers to assist with the 29th annual Fall Carnival scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 25.

Volunteers are needed to run carnival games and hand out prizes to participants. Volunteers need to be at the Recreation Center by 5:30 p.m. and will be finished with the event at approximately 8:15 p.m. Full-time staff members will be available to verify volunteer hours if needed for a school project. Volunteers are welcome to dress in costume if they would like.
