Prosecutors this week dismissed the case against a South Dakota man who had been suspected of making a bomb threat to a Casper hotel.
Trevor James Huckaby has been accused in March of blackmail and terroristic threats.
"He wasn't guilty," his Casper defense attorney Cindi Wood said Thursday. "The police and the media basically convicted him beforehand."
In its motion for dismissal, the Natrona County District Attorney's Office said, "it appears that there is reasonable doubt as to Mr. Huckaby's guilt."
Huckaby was wrongfully accused, Wood said.
"We are maintaining that he is absolutely, 100 percent not guilty," she said.
A message left Thursday for Assistant District Attorney Joshua Stensaas, who signed the dismissal motion, wasn't returned.
Casper police arrested Huckaby March 16 in his room at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel. That night, the hotel received several threatening phone calls from a man who claimed there were 2.5 pounds of explosives in the boiler room, according to police reports from that time. The man demanded $5 million and gave the hotel an hour to comply.
Police checked the boiler room and didn't find anything suspicious. The hotel was not evacuated.
Officers attempted to track the phone number and came up with Huckaby's name, according to a police affidavit filed after his arrest. However, Huckaby, who was a maintenance worker for the Ramkota hotel chain at the time, couldn't have made those calls, his attorney said.
"They were saying he was using his computer to call the hotel," Wood said. "He had the software to do that, but his software wasn't set up. He couldn't dial phone numbers, just other computers."
Wood said her client was on the phone with his wife for more than two hours the evening of the incident. He had just lain down when officers came into his room.
Huckaby lost his job at Ramkota over the incident, Wood said. He has since found another maintenance job.
"He is just really a nice person, who thank goodness, has a family that believed in him and stuck by him," Wood said.
