Natrona County High students take honors

Natrona County High School students are keeping busy with more than classes.

Many students have received honors in all their activities this semester:

Jay Shah and Eric Yeager are among 18 students on an Academic All-Star team chosen to represent Wyoming at a national speech competition in Orlando, Fla.

Speech and debate teams from NCHS took first place at the district competition. Paul Shriver and Isaac Murrell qualified in public forum. Ursela Groat qualified in international extemporaneous speech. Tyler Hansen and Tommy Shriver qualified in duo interpretation. Rachel Coffey received first-place alternate in dramatic interpretation. Paul Shriver also placed first in humor.

The NC forensics team finished in first place in the district sweepstakes competition as a school with 86 total rounds. Individual qualifiers for the national tournament this summer are Ursela Groat, international extemporary; Paul Shriver and Isaac Murrell, public forum debate; Tyler Hansen and Thomas Shriver, duet; and Paul Shriver, first-place humor. Alternates included Nathaniel Barella and Ursela Groat in public forum debate; Rachel Coffey in drama; John Christie in Student Congress; Ursela Groat in Student Congress and Paul Shriver in Student Congress.

Kaitlin Balfour, Michelle Page, Molly Michalov and Cassandra Robb, coached by Sharon Farquhar, took the state title in gymnastics. It was NCHS's first gymnastics state title since 1976.

Briston Brenton, Jimmy Owens and Nate Myers were named All-State Wrestlers.

Morgan Cropsey, Matt Hall, Lyndi Speiser and Shanna McCleary are All-State Nordic Skiers.

The NCHS Boys Alpine Ski Team, coached by Tom Ellbogen, took the state championship this year. The team includes Andrew Brus, Alex Martin, Jeff Stamp, Chris Weaver, Reed Akin, Ryan Butler, Austin Deane, Sean Munoz and Joel Simonson.

The boys' basketball team, coached by Randy Roden, took first place in the state competition. Team members are Scott Kugler, Michael Dietz, Tom Earl, Mario Harris, Arthur Steward, Joelon Jackson, Michael McQuade, Ryan Murphy, Zach Powell, Max Gustafson, AD Boatright and Matt Rich. The girls' basketball team, coached by Bryan Costello, took second place.

Chelsea Carrick is the indoor track individual state champion. Her coach is Rosie Brown.

Paul Schriver and Brendan LaChance are 2007 National Merit Scholars.

The NCHS Chess Club took second in the Wyoming State Scholastsic Chess Championship in Rawlins. Team members included Gabe Nelson, David Hippe, Ryan Wolfe and Austin Brown.

Samantha Marquard and Christine Pond were chosen to participate in the 2007 University of Wyoming Summer High School Institute.

Ryan Parker, Asper Engberg, Heidi Rosenbaum, Heather Kendrick, Alissa Zobel, J.R. Wallace, Chris Barella and Katie Fender won seven awards and trophies at the DECA State Conference. Asper Engberg, Ryan Parker, Heidi Rosenbaum, Heather Kendrick, Alissa Zobel, Brittany Batchelor, Jessica Yates, Shawna Browning, Derek Wilson, Chris Barella and J.R. Wallace also qualified for DECA Nationals in Orlando.
