Rules apply to outdoor fireplaces
The Casper Fire-EMS Department has issued guidelines about using outdoor fireplaces, fire pits and other of the "recreational fire appliances" the department says have proliferated in recent years.
According to a news release, open burning or open flame devices are not allowed without a permit unless they meet several requirements:
* The appliance must be listed by Underwriters Laboratories
* The appliance must have a screen or spark arrestor and it must be in place while burning
* Solid-fuel burning appliances may only be fueled by cut, split firewood (yard debris, branches, leaves, garbage, etc. cannot be burned)
* A fire extinguisher of at least a 4-A rating or a garden hose must be in close proximity to the appliance
* The fire shall not be left unattended at any time until it is fully extinguished
* The fire shall not be within 25 feet of a structure or combustible materials
* Burning can not take place if wind conditions create a hazardous situation
Any fire deemed offensive or objectionable by another person shall not be permitted. If someone calls the fire department the fire will be extinguished. For more, contact the Casper fire prevention bureau at 235-8222.
Hunger rally today
Everyone is invited to an event today from 10 a.m. to noon at City Park that will recognize Hunger Awareness Day with a mayor's proclamation, speeches and music. At the end of the program the audience will be able to participate in ringing bells to mark the day.
The event is organized by the Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies, based in Mills.
Casper residents can also help by eating at one of several local restaurants that will donate a portion of sales today to the food bank. Those are Eggington's, Johnny J's, Old Chicago, Parkway Cafe, Poor Boys, Sherrie's Place, Sunrise Coffee Cafe and the Wonder Bar.
