New blood may be in short supply for Natrona County's state legislators.
One of three incumbent senators and four of eight incumbent representatives will run unopposed during the 2008 election season, according to an election filing report from county clerk Renea Vitto.
Sen. Kit Jennings (SD 28), and Reps. Roy Cohee (HD 35), Mary Hales (HD 36), Steve Harshman (HD 37) and Lisa Shepperson (HD 58) will all run unopposed in their races. Hales is a Democrat; the rest are Republicans.
Some incumbents will have to fight for their seats, however.
In the Aug. 20 primary, Democrat Bert Toews, a Casper addiction medicine doctor, will face incumbent Republican Sen. Bill Landen in District 27. Last July, the Natrona County Commission - after interviewing three candidates nominated by the Republican Party - chose Landen to replace John Barrasso, who was named to the U.S. Senate by Gov. Dave Freudenthal to fill the seat held by the late U.S. Sen. Craig Thomas.
In the Senate District 30 primary, incumbent Republican Charles Scott will run against fellow rancher and former opponent Tom Walters. Walters lost to Scott when the two ran for the same seat in the 2004 Republican primary.
Drew Perkins, a Republican representing Senate District 29, is in his second year of his four-year term and is not running.
Past the primary and in the Nov. 4 general election, incumbent Rep. Bob Brechtel will run against Democrat Fred Arnold for the District 38 seat, and Republican Rep. Thomas Lockhart runs against Libertarian Timothy DeLany for District 57.
Republican Rep. Tim Stubson will run for the District 56 seat against Democratic candidate and Casper lawyer Jackie Brown. Stubson, a Casper lawyer, was appointed by the Natrona County Commission to the seat earlier this year when it was vacated by Tom Walsh.
Democratic Rep. Mary Meyer Gilmore of House District 59 will not run for re-election, but her husband, Mike Gilmore, also a Democrat, is running for her seat. Republican Tanise M. Lavering of Mills will run for the seat, as well.
Natrona County Commission
Nine candidates will run for two open seats on the Natrona County Commission.
Republicans Michael Corrigan, Sam Hammer, Cameron Savage, Jim Judge, Ruth Doyle, and Ed Opella filed to join the Commission. GOP Commissioner Matt Keating also filed for re-election. Corrigan is from Evansville; the rest are from Casper.
The Democrats include Ray Pacheco and last-minute filer Worth Christie. Christie unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House in 1996. In 2007, Christie's All American Professional Basketball League filed for bankruptcy protection.
Current commissioner Republican Jon Campbell will not run for re-election, but said he may run for a different office in the future.
Casper City Council
Former mayor and current councilmember Kate Sarosky and councilmember Page Fagan will run against Josh Kronberg and Kimberly Holloway for two open city council seats in Ward I.
Councilmember Stefanie Boster and Monte Henrie Jr. will run for two open seats in Ward II. Current councilmember Lynne Whalen will not run for re-election.
Terry Lane and Peggy Phillips will run against councilmember Maury Daubin for one open seat in Ward III.
Town Councils
In Bar Nunn, Wendell Tekell, Paula Stewart, Josh Brown, John R. Blase and Jamie Purcell are running.
In Evansville, Doug White, Tiffany Rayner, James Wagner and Carl Baker are running.
And in Mills, Rosalie Coleman, Elsie J. Herbort, Norma E. DeGarland, Scott Cotton, Alexander Osborn IV and Clyde "Ed" Greenwood are running.
