Some day, some time, there will be dry sidewalks ready for skateboarding and dry pavement ready for helmeted bike riding.

That ever-hopeful thought drives Safe Kids of Central Wyoming volunteers, who host the annual Safe Kids Day indoors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, at the Casper Rec Center.

Besides, you just can't beat free pancakes cooked and served by the Casper Kiwanis Club from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in front of the Senior Center next door.

Kids have a far greater risk of being severely injured in a biking accident or fall, as a motor vehicle passenger or a pedestrian, or by drowning during the summer than during any other time of year, according to statistics from Safe Kids program coordinator Diane Guerttman. In fact, 41 percent of all children's accidental deaths take place between May and the end of August.

"Gear Up for Safety" is this year's theme. There will be entertainment, safety devices, activities, fun and food to complete the day. Booster seats, an assortment of helmets, life jackets and more will be available.

Safety devices will include vouchers for booster seats, gun locks, helmets for biking, scooters, skateboards and horseback riding, life jackets, choke tubes, DNA kits and outlet covers/cabinet locks.

Entertainment throughout the day will be provided by "Anna and Friends;" Dance Evolution; clowns; Vince and Larry the crash dummy guys; McGruff; Sparky from the fire department; Pinky, the poison prevention elephant; and Custer the Coyote, mascot for the Wyoming Cavalry.

Two bikes from Mountain Sports, donated by American National Bank, and 26 other prizes will be awarded to participants who take part in a minimum of 12 safety activities during the day.
