State Rep. Liz Gentile of Evansville will resign her position Monday because her new job doesn't allow her enough time off to serve, she said Thursday.
Gentile represents House District 36 in Evansville and parts of east Casper. Gentile is one of two Democrats and three women among Natrona County's 12 state legislators.
Gentile was a manager at an off-track betting site and is taking a job with Beneficial Finance Wyoming, she said Thursday. She said she hates to leave and would like to finish out her term.
Gentile was elected in 2002, unseated in 2004 by Republican Gerald Gay, and elected again in 2006 after Gay didn't support removing sales tax from food.
Gentile said serving in the Legislature was interesting. "I think everyone should do it at least once," she said.
The Wyoming Democratic Party is seeking applicants to fill out the remainder of her two-year term, the party's communications director Bill Luckett said Thursday.
The precinct committee members will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, July 2, at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Hall at 691 English Drive to choose three finalists for the position, Luckett said. The state party will then submit those names to the Natrona County commissioners, who will have five days to choose one to represent House District 36.
Four of five county commissioners are Republican, but Luckett said he thinks they will make a choice that's "in the best interest of the people."
The party has been reviewing lists of registered Democrats in Gentile's district to find candidates. Gentile said her husband, Evansville Police Chief Zachary Gentile, would apply.
"We've found quite a few high-quality people," Luckett said. "It's really a matter of who has the ability to make that kind of time commitment."
Luckett said the representative will face issues including the quality child care effort, Wyoming quality of life, wildlife issues, housing and development.
