Library extends school-year hours

The Natrona County Public Library will be open late on weeknights during the school year to accommodate homework schedules and other evening library needs, according to a media release.

Beginning Sunday, the library will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Metro hosts Adopt-A-Thon

Metro Animal Shelter will host its annual "Dog Days of Summer Adopt-A-Thon" from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday at the shelter, 2392 E. Metro Road, according to a media release.

A Casper veterinarian will conduct a microchip clinic and offer vaccinations from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost of the microchips is $20; vaccinations range from $8 to $15.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Museum celebrates accreditation

The Nicolaysen Art Museum & Discovery Center will open its doors from noon to 7 p.m. on Monday for a community celebration of its recent accreditation by the American Association of Museums, according to a media release.

The museum, typically closed on Mondays, will not charge admission.

A new exhibit, the 24th annual Rocky Mountain Invitational Exhibition, will be featured. It includes 85 works for regional artists that will be auctioned at the museum's upcoming fundraiser. The exhibit concludes Sept. 11.

The museum will also offer special tours at 2, 4 and 6 p.m., free gifts to the first 50 visitors and other prizes.

KW students excel at competition

Nine Kelly Walsh High School students competed with Latin students from across the country at the National Junior Classical League Competition, July 27 to Aug. 1 at the University of California-Davis, according to a media release.

All of the KW students placed 46th or higher in overall sweepstakes out of the 1,500 participants. Ethan Atwood and Logan Wren placed in the top 10 on academic tests, and Laurana Brink was seventh in graphic arts and was the highest KW finisher.

KW participants won a total of 54 awards. Atwood received eight awards; Brink, Wren and Beth Elliot seven apiece; Matt Binder and Kendra Chalkley six each; Jessica Clarson five; and Blayne Bogart and Kevin Buffington one each.

Group hosts star gazing

Weather permitting, the Central Wyoming Astronomical Society will host a star gazing party at 8 p.m. on Saturday at Bessemer Bend State Park, located nine miles west of Casper off Highway 220 on County Road 308.

The party is open to the public, and telescopes will be furnished by members of the group. Wear long sleeve shirts and insect repellent for mosquitos.
