A federal court jury found Richard Serafin guilty Friday of possessing firearms to further a crime of violence.
The jury sided with Assistant U.S. Attorney Stuart Healy III, who said during closing aruments Thursday that Serafin talked about shooting illegal immigrants with an undercover U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent - to whom Serafin sold an illegal rifle. Healy also said Serafin dealt in illegal silencers and weapons meant specifically to kill people.
The ATF agent who eventually bought the rifle from Serafin learned through Internet research that Serafin was the "CO for the 045th BN/44th FF Central Wyoming Militia."
Serafin pleaded guilty last week to possessing illegal firearms - two AR 15 type rifles with barrels less than 16 inches.
Robert Rogers, Serafin's defense attorney, said during closing arguments that his client only sold the gun to the undercover agent because of government entrapment, and that he never intended to hurt anyone.
For the possession of a firearm to further a crime of violence charge, Serafin faces no less than five years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine. For the unregistered firearm charge, he faces zero to 10 years in prison and up to another $250,000 fine.
