A Natrona County woman accused of methodically poisoning her stepmother with Visine eye drops has pleaded no contest to an aggravated assault charge.

Alexis Jennings, 19, was arrested in November after poisoning the victim’s tea and coffee for several months, officials say. It is estimated that the victim consumed about 20 bottles of the eye drops altogether.

The woman had to visit the hospital twice for myriad symptoms, and doctors were initially baffled as to the cause of her illness. Officials say the victim became suspicious of her stepdaughter after seeing a Web search history on a computer used by Jennings.

Jennings reportedly admitted to the assault when she was interviewed by deputies and said she wanted her stepmother “gone.” When officials asked for clarification, Jennings confirmed that she wanted her stepmother dead.

Jennings told authorities her stepmother had betrayed her trust by telling her then-boyfriend something she had been told in confidence.

The defendant appeared in Natrona County District Court Thursday morning to enter her change of plea to the single aggravated assault charge. Jennings was permitted to remain silent regarding the details of the crime, but Assistant District Attorney Dan Itzen filled the court in.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors have agreed to cap their sentencing arguments at two to four years in the Wyoming Women’s Center. She could have faced up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

A District Court judge will hear the arguments from both defense and prosecution and ultimately rule on the exact sentence at a later date.
