Southridge Elementary School won't open by next school year

Southridge Elementary School won't be ready for the first day of school as planned. Representatives of W.N. McMurry Construction Co. told the Natrona County School District board of trustees Monday that April snowstorms caused the delay.

The board requested an updated project schedule by Friday.

Some trustees expressed frustration that planned snow days had not absorbed the delay, given the otherwise mild winter.

"We're very pleased when we can give a project to a local contractor, and I think that W.N. McMurry is a fine company," Trustee Dave Applegate said.  "But I think the project management on this project has been lacking. I look forward to getting a detailed schedule ... and seeing some performance over the next few months that shows your commitment to the project."

The updated schedule is due in time for the board's construction steering committee meeting  10 a.m. to noon Friday at the district central office, 970 N. Glenn Road.

Are they really that surprised??? This is their first school, largest project they have ever attempted, and were way way way low with their bid. While it is grossly unfair to the students and families that want to attend Southridge, the NCSD and State Facilities Department wanted to save some money and were warned 12 months ago this would get what you pay for....

Seriously, they are going to blame the few snow days in April to the delay? I live right by the school and maybe if they had more than a handful of guys working at a time this project could get completed on time. I'm not in the construction business, but I would think that in order to try and make the deadline you would double up the manpower and get working on the schools. There are times that we see maybe 2 guys over there, how is the project supposed to get completed with that many working? Don't blame the 3 snow days we had in April for the delay, Southridge staff and students have already been waiting too long for this school to be completed.
