Today's Highlights

Bars have vouchers

The You Drink & Drive, You Lose 2008 campaign committee wants to remind everyone to always designate a driver before you go to a party or a bar. If you have had too much to drink, stay where you are or call a friend or family member for a ride home, or call a cab or ask the bartender for information on a cab voucher. The committee has distributed cab vouchers to bars in town through the generosity of Western Distributing. Prepaid cab vouchers in bars are available through Jan. 1, 2009. And remember, report every drunk driver immediately by calling 911 or REDDI (1-800-442-9090) if you are on the highway. Be ready to provide a location, vehicle description and license plate number. Make responsible choices and demand those around you do the same.

Humane Society announces hours

The Casper Humane Society (CHS) will change it hours of operation slightly for the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

This week, the shelter will be closed to the public on New Year's Day. The shelter will re-open on Friday, Jan. 2 and will maintain its regular hours of operation that weekend.

No pet adoptions are taking place this week. The CHS has found in the past that animals who are adopted Christmas week tend to be returned a few months later or go missing from their new home due to the busyness of the holiday and the added stress on both people and pets. People wishing to add a pet to their home before the end of the year are encouraged to come to the shelter and look at the animals available for adoption or visit the CHS' website: www.chswyo.org. An adoption application is required, and it can take up to 48 hours for the application to be approved.

The Humane Society's regular hours of operation are Monday -Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and from noon-4 p.m. on Sunday.

Nic closed

The Nicolaysen Art Museum and Discovery Center, as well as The Museum Shop at the Nic, will be closed several days during the remainder of the year so the museum s staff can spend time with their families during the upcoming holiday season.

Specifically, the museum is closed through today; as well as New Year s Day.

For more information, call the museum at 235-5247 or visit the web site: www.thenic.org.

Helping Others

Help a friend

Two weeks ago, longtime Casper resident Jeffery Scott O Brien was going to Rochester, Minn., for cancer treatment, which he has been battling for some time.

He had his truck full of valuables which were his only possessions and had a seizure due to the cancer. His truck was totaled and he lost most of his belongings.

Needless to say he has no insurance, either vehicle or medical.

His pickup hit a snow bank and shot 15 feet into the air only to land in a ravine far below the road.

He is not only suffering from cancer, but from head trauma, shattered left leg, broken right arm, multiple broken ribs, a broken spine and numerous cuts, abrasions and contusions.

Jeff will be disabled hence forth.

I am asking for donations from those who know Jeff as he has touched many hearts.

The Jeff O'Brien Relief Fund has been established at any First Interstate Bank location in Casper or Mills. Donations can also be made at the Eagles Club in Casper or call Mike Walock at 237-3915 or 899-4437.

Let s help Jeff get through this!

Humane Society Plans Vaccination Clinic, Pet Photos in January

The Casper Humane Society (CHS) will once again offer its monthly vaccination clinic and public pet photo opportunity in January.

The low-cost vaccination clinic will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 from 5 7 p.m., and Pet Photos with DeMaine Image will take place on Saturday, January 10, 2009 from 1 3 p.m.

The public is invited to bring their cats and dogs to the shelter for the vaccination clinic; no appointment is necessary. All animals must be restrained, either on a leash or in a pet carrier. Rabies and distemper shots for both dogs and cats are available; additionally, feline leukemia vaccinations are offered. Cost is $10 per vaccine except for the cat combo that includes the feline leukemia vaccine cost for this vaccination is $20.

Pet owners can also purchase city pet licenses during the clinic hours. Cost for the license tags is $5.00 each for pets that are spayed/neutered and $25.00 each for those animals which are not spayed/neutered.

Each month DeMaine Image takes photos of the newest animals available for adoption at the CHS and also provides community pet owners the opportunity to have photos taken of their pets. A $10 sitting fee is charged, and pet owners can choose from several photo packages; price varies depending upon the package chosen. People can also choose their own background with a special new Green Screen technology! When you have a portrait of your pet taken, you also help an animal at the CHS find a home as a portion of the $10 sitting fee is given to the CHS to help offset costs of having the shelter animals' photos taken. These photos are then used to advertise the pets on the CHS website as well as on Petfinder.com and in local media, providing better opportunity for the shelter animals to be adopted. For more information about the pet photo opportunity, the photo packages available, and the background technology options, contact DeMaine Image at 266-0945.

So, if your pet is due for its vaccinations or you want a special portrait of your pet, come to either or both of these events!

For more information on these January events, please contact the Casper Humane Society at 265-5439.

Frequent Fliers Can Help Make Wishes Come True

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wyoming is asking frequent travelers across the country to contribute frequent flier miles and help make wishes come true for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

When Make-A-Wish volunteers ask a child for his or her favorite wish, very often the response begins with, I want to go . In fact, more than 62 percent of all wishes granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation involve travel. Fortunately, most major airlines have created programs that allow members of their frequent traveler loyalty programs to donate their unused miles to charity. Such contributions have enabled the Make-A-Wish Foundation to send thousands of children with life-threatening medical conditions and their families on the trip of a lifetime, and have saved the Foundation millions of dollars each year.

Why should someone donate miles to the Make-A-Wish Foundation rather than redeem them for free travel? The answer is as clear as the smiles on the faces of wish children. Thanks to the outstanding support the Foundation receives from its airline partners and the airlines customers, these children s wishes, and thousands of others, have been fulfilled.

A contribution of frequent flier miles to the Make-A-Wish Foundation is one of the most direct ways to help make a difference in the life of a child with a life-threatening illness. The mileage the Foundation receives will help provide experiences that wish children and their families will cherish for a lifetime.

Most major airlines have mileage donation programs. For a complete listing of participating airlines and detailed contribution procedures, please visit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wyoming Web site at www.wyoming.wish.org and click on Giving or call 1-888-WYO-WISH.

Family Promise seeks help for struggling families

Struggling families have no choice but to do without many of life's necessities. On behalf of these families, Family Promise of Casper asks the community to consider what things they would be forced to do without if they suddenly found themselves homeless, and then decide what they will choose to do without in order to help homeless families (perhaps the value of a specialty drink, a dinner out, a movie, or a mortgage/rent payment).

Family Promise of Casper is a nonprofit organization preparing to provide services to help homeless families in Natrona County become self-sufficient, seek employment, housing and the tools they need for success and independence. Volunteers from faith-based organizations will provide food and shelter to these families during their transition.

This is your opportunity to help. Donations may be sent to Family Promise of Casper, P.O. Box 4173, Casper, 82604-4173. For more information, visit www.familypromiseofcasper.org or call 265-6294.

Put your stamp on Wyo kids

Net profits from the purchase of personalized custom stamps and coordinating stationery will be donated to the Wyoming Early Childhood Partnership to fund the nonprofit's Wyoming Kids First Initiative.

Because of the increased demand for these stamps during the holiday season, executive director Pam Walker has gift certificates that can be given as gifts. Each certificate is coded and customers can go online to the manufacturer to enter their customized order information. Shipping is included in the cost of the certificate, which sells for $47.50, including tax.

Stamps and stationery are developed through a Dallas-based company owned by a friend of Walker's.

Stamps are available in a wide range of designs and the stationery is designed so that the stamp may be used with each piece, including calling cards, note cards, gift tags, note paper and more.
