Survivors unite

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life is looking for cancer survivors to be part of our Celebrating Survivorship. Be our guest for a buffet dinner "Under the Tent" from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4 at Kelly Walsh High School Harry Geldien Stadium.

We are planning a special evening for you, a guest or family member with Bingo and prizes "Under the Tent" followed by the Opening Ceremonies and Victory Lap. Be part of the camaraderie with other survivors, join hands, meet new and old friends who have been there and are here to tell about it.

Later, a candlelight (luminaria) ceremony is held to honor survivors and to remember those who have lost the battle. Relay offers the newly diagnosed an opportunity to meet others who have survived cancer. It gives the cancer patient in treatment the opportunity to share experiences with others. For long-term survivors, Relay brings recognition that the community cares not only about their experiences, but also about the hope they offer those beginning a journey with cancer.

Contact the American Cancer Society soon at 235-0044 to register to be partake in this celebration.

Gibson earns presidential award

Ian Gibson, 15, who completed the ninth grade at Dean Morgan Junior High this spring, has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President's Volunteer Service Award.

The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. Ian Gibson participated in the Spirit of Community program this year as a representative of Dean Morgan Junior High School in Casper, where he was a ninth grader.

Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes young people across America for outstanding community service activities. More than 200,000 young people across America have been considered for these awards since the program began in 1995.

Program applications were distributed last September through all public and private middle level and high schools, Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs, and Volunteer Centers.

New scholarship at CC

The "Cathy Jean Vlastos Radiography Scholarship" has been established in memory of Jean Vlastos by her husband, George, and family.

Vlastos, who died from breast cancer earlier this year, was known for, among other things, her kind and empathic spirit. She was a student in the radiography program at Casper College and received her graduation pin shortly before her death.

According to Paul Hallock, the scholarship will be given to nontraditional, second-year students enrolled in the Casper College radiography program. "The family's plan is to establish an endowment of at least $7,500 from family and friends," said Hallock, executive director of the Casper College Foundation.

"The family hopes to be able to present a scholarship to a radiography student this fall," Hallock said. Other criteria for eligibility for the scholarship include having a 3.0 or higher grade point average, and financial need. Applicants will also need to write a three-paragraph essay on career goals and objectives.

Those interested in donating a scholarship gift can contact the Casper College Foundation at 268-2256 or send their gift to the Casper College Foundation, 125 College Dr., Casper, 82601 with a note that the monies are for the "Cathy Jean Vlastos Scholarship."
