Welcome, doctors

Cheers to the Wyoming Medical Center, which in the past year has been able to recruit at least 22 physicians to Casper under its new chief medical officer, Dr. Gene Ogrod. The hospital helps interested physicians by paying education loans and relocation expenses, plus sign-on bonuses and assisting with start-up costs, among other assistance.

Holiday headaches

Jeers to people who insist on shooting off fireworks in Natrona County, especially on the Fourth of July weekend. The activity is prohibited throughout the county, but that doesn't deter some people who are intent on disobeying the law. A high-quality public display will be offered tonight at the Casper Events Center for anyone who wants to enjoy holiday fireworks.

Trail improvements

Cheers to the 27 volunteers who worked for many hours on June 20 to put the finishing touches on a new section of an interpretive trail overlooking the North Platte River. The trail northeast of Gray Reef Reservoir will improve access while protecting the delicate riparian habitat. The Casper BLM office sponsored the work day.

Predator problems

Jeers to whoever illegally introduced walleye into Buffalo Bill Reservoir west of Cody last year. The fish threaten the local trout population, which has always been the main draw for both local anglers and tourists. In an effort to curb the walleye population, Wyoming Game and Fish has placed no limit on catching the species.

Hotel sign stays

Cheers to the Natrona County Commission for allowing the "ghost sign" on the east side of the new Townsend Justice Center to stay. The sign marked the location of the Townsend Hotel, one of the West's premier hotels before it fell into disrepair. Local preservationists were successful in their efforts to keep officials from covering this historic reminder.
