Player of the Week

Cheers to Austyn Carta-Samuels, the University of Wyoming freshman quarterback who has revitalized the Cowboys since becoming the starter two games ago. He was named Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. He accounted for nearly 300 total offensive yards in a win over Florida Atlantic.

Bad decision

Jeers to Kenneth Gibson of Laramie, who failed to register with Wyoming authorities as a sex offender for a sexual assault he committed in Colorado. Gibson, who was sentenced to 37 months in prison, lost his appeal, which was based on the faulty argument that the state's sex offender registration system isn't up to federal standards.

Saving wildlife

Cheers to a joint Wyoming Department of Transportation and Game and Fish Department project that has built wildlife highway underpasses for migrating mule deer around the state, including the latest near Baggs. It's part of an effort to reduce the number of deer-vehicle collisions, which seems to be working.

Poor reputation

Jeers to Vanessa Marie Griffee of Eugene, Ore., who was convicted Tuesday of conspiracy to possess and distribute the hallucinogenic drug LSD at the Rainbow Family gathering in Wyoming in the summer of 2008. Such events would be better received by the public if drugs weren't so prevalent.

Helping hands

Cheers to the Good News Church in Casper, which offered to provide overnight shelter to the displaced residents of the KC Apartments, who were forced to move Friday because of building fire code violations. Casper Fire Department officials, however, said the church was not equipped to handle overnight guests.
