Friend of United Way
Cheers to former Vice President Dick Cheney, who last Sunday was the special guest of the Platte Society, whose members all donate at least $500 annually to United Way of Natrona County. The event was held at the Wolcott Galleria. Thanking Mick McMurry for the plane ride, Cheney quipped, "Nice plane, Mick. I used to have a nice plane."
Dangerous behavior
Jeers to Nicole Marie Durham, 24, of Glenrock, who was arrested in connection with allegations that she shoplifted at a Casper store. A security guard found two needles in her possession, which later tested positive for methamphetamine. Durham, who is seven months pregnant, told police she had used meth earlier that morning, but she pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Open government
Cheers to the Casper City Council for deciding to broadcast its work sessions. It's a victory for open government. Many residents are unable to regularly attend the meetings, where the council can't take formal action but does much of its work. Still to be determined is what broadcast format will be used and how much it will cost.
Paying the price
Jeers to Jason Puzio, 27, of Gillette, who last November ran over Marina Soroncean, crushing her pelvis and breaking her spine before fleeing the scene. On Wednesday a jury found him guilty of aggravated assault. He faces up to 10 years in prison. His victim was hospitalized for more than a month.
Java with Joel
Cheers to Joel Dvorak, Natrona County School District superintendent, for making himself available to talk with the public at "Java With Joel" sessions. The focus is on the district's finances, with Dvorak seeking ways to save money. We hope for much better participation; reportedly only one person came to the first event.
