Only one set of rules for all

I am concerned that the public may not understand the reasons for the confrontation and controversy they've heard about involving myself, members of the public, fire department, employees and the administration of the town of Mills.

I expect no apologies and offer none regarding statements and accusations made by me or others about me, but will attempt to offer only an explanation to help the public understand what has promoted this negative publicity.

Clearly, we all have core values and principles we live by, and as a Council member, that same set of values and principles help guide me in addressing problems and resolving issues.

I'm sure we all respect the fact that certain rules and regulations are in place to ensure some order to our community and society in general and realize that when those rules and regulations are, or appear, not to be followed nor applied fairly and equally, it creates distrust, defiance and lack of confidence in those who have been elected to represent the citizens of Mills. When I chose to become a Council member, I believe my duties and responsibilities included overseeing the authorization and enforcement of those rules and regulations.

I have simply been standing firm for what I believe is in the best interest of all. You cannot have, or appear to have, two sets of rules, one for the "good ol' boys" and one for everybody else. Nor can you justify any improper or inappropriate action by saying "that's the way we've always done it." Nor do I believe in changing the rules in the middle of the game -- the decision-making process -- to achieve a certain outcome.

The accusations and criticisms have admittedly frustrated me, and I believe confused many people, raising questions about my actions, motivation and character. I appreciate the support of my efforts and want to assure the general public that I intend to fulfill my commitment by ensuring, to the best of my ability, that one set of rules does apply to everyone.

I have strong views, firm principles that I live by and a backbone to stand up for what I believe is in the best interest of this little town and the people I love and respect. You can all rest assured that I will not just "go along to get along" by letting George, Joe or whomever decide which rule will be followed or enforced.

Please feel free to call me at 234-7989.
