Editor:
Leo Sanchez, like Joseph Goebbels, the Reichminister of propaganda for the Nazis, employs heavy artillery of deception in an attempt at swaying the audience from a position, usually away from the facts. Unfortunately, for him, because he uses rather noticeable techniques, I do not think he is very successful.
Sanchez, like Goebbels, uses labeling as a tool to shift public opinion. In his letter on Nov. 19 ("Hitler also had ‘organizers’"), he connects President Barack Obama to ACORN, accusing Obama of being "friends" with ACORN and "union thugs." His statement lacks a thorough explanation of these relationships.
Sanchez continues to spew propaganda when he utilizes anecdotal evidence to compare Democrats to the Nazis by stating, "Like the Nazis, the Democrats refuse to prosecute their community organizers where ACORN agents were filmed giving advice on how to set up houses of prostitution with government funds. Sanchez uses an extreme example to admonish ACORN and the entire Democratic Party.
If he spoke to an uninformed audience, ACORN and unions must be the enemy. In reality, unions are a group of people that work together for better wages and working conditions; and ACORN is an organization that advocates for low-income families to improve neighborhood safety, voter registration, affordable housing, health care, and other social issues. A good propagandist never mentions the positive qualities of the intended target.
Sanchez, like Goebbels, makes use of repetition and slogans. These combined are effective to shape a Big Lie. For about the third time he repeats the label of Obama supporters as "Kool-Aid" drinkers for agreeing with his policies. Goebbels was a master of repetition when he and Hitler accused the Jews of being "inferior."
I am comparing the use of fallacious language between Sanchez and Goebbels, not accusing Sanchez of having the same objectives as Goebbels. This would be called oversimplification, a tactic that Sanchez uses in many of his letters. It seems that Sanchez is so willing to deceive his readers, he is ill-informed of his own propaganda methods.
