In reference to "No one likes the truth" (Letters/Aug. 21): With colonization of America (Turtle Island), it seems the evolution of European society was to redefine civilization. They used the excuse indigenous people were animals and had no souls, an excuse to kill the tribes and take their land and resources. All to have the American dream ...
The government, with the help of the Christian churches, destroyed traditional tribal religious activities, along with tribal languages. It wasn't until 1978 the indigenous tribes had religious freedom, one reason why the Pilgrims came to America. Yet tribal people are still being prosecuted for attempting to practice their religion. Tribal people who attempt to go back to religious practices (e.g. Winslow Friday), practices that our ancestors participated in.
Because of assimilation, Winslow had improper guidance, but he still attempted to honor his grandmother. He is once again being prosecuted by the court because he was trying to practice his religion. How long will this go on?
