CHEYENNE - A researcher in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Wyoming has received a $690,000 American Cancer Society grant to study better drug delivery to kill ovarian cancer cells.

"I had to impress 23 reviewers," Youqing Shen said in a telephone interview.

The topic of his research is "Fast Cytoplasmic Drug Delivery Nanoparticles for Ovarian Cancer."

Shen's grant was one of 146 totaling more than $52 million awarded by the American Cancer Society and focused on promising new investigators. It will pay for research to develop a targeted therapy for ovarian cancer.

A native of China, Shen has been at UW for three years and five months. He received his doctorate from McMaster University near Toronto, Canada.

He said ovarian cancer is rarely discovered early because there usually are no symptoms.
