Girl dies in rollover crash
A 13-year-old Moorcroft girl was killed in a single-car, rollover crash near Pine Haven on Tuesday, according to a release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
McKenzie Cain was seated in the rear of the 1995 Chevrolet Berretta at the time of the accident and was the only passenger who wasn't wearing a seat belt.
Brittney Cain, 16, was driving the vehicle. The other passenger was 15-year-old Chelsea Dampman. Both are from Moorcroft, and both were treated an released from Campbell County Hospital in Gillette.
According to the report, Brittney Cain was driving westbound on Highway 113 when the rollover happened at 9:41 a.m. She told troopers she was talking on the cell phone when her vehicle drifted off the roadway and onto the north shoulder. The patrol said evidence indicated Cain overcorrected the steering and lost control. The Berretta rolled twice, going through the right-of-way fence and coming to a rest on its wheels.
During the rollover, McKenzie Cain was partially ejected through the rear passenger window.
Woman will stand trial in killing
CHEYENNE - A judge has ordered a Cheyenne woman to stand trial on a charge of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of her husband last month.
Circuit Judge Thomas Campbell on Wednesday ordered 33-year-old Jessica Venable to stand trial in the June 30 stabbing death of 35-year-old Michael P. Venable.
Prosecutors say Jessica Venable stabbed her husband in the heart at their home in Cheyenne. The woman's lawyer says the dead man has beaten his wife on several earlier occasions.
Ex-officer pleads to pot charge
GILLETTE - A former Gillette police officer pleaded guilty on Thursday to a felony drug charge.
Thomas Brent Clark, 23, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to deliver marijuana. Prosecutors agreed to dismiss another felony charge of delivery of marijuana and agreed to recommend that he not serve any prison time.
Clark was hired by the Gillette Police Department in January and worked there until the middle of March.
Prosecutors charge that Clark in February took about a pound of marijuana from his father's patrol car. Officials say Clark's father is a deputy in Uinta County who handles a drug-sniffing dog and kept the drug in his car for training purposes.
Clark will be sentenced later.
Dog deaths raise concerns
POWELL - A newly formed Park County group is urging area residents to be on alert after the discovery of at least four mutilated dogs.
Stop Taking Our Pets appeared before the Park County Commission on Tuesday to ask county employees to be on the lookout for dog crimes.
The group formed in March over concern about disappearing dogs, which they thought were being stolen for dogfighting.
But since April, group members say there have been at least four cases of dog mutilation.
One dog carcass was found skinned and with its paws cut off. Another dog was found dead in a bag after its owner received an anonymous phone call.
