SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Health care positions make up eight of the 10 best-paying jobs in Utah, according to a new rankings compiled by the Utah Department of Workforce Services.
Obstetricians and gynecologists top the list, earning an average wage of $93.30 per hour. Surgeons make the second-highest average hourly wage of $92.70, followed by internists ($77.50); anesthesiologists ($74.90); pediatricians ($70.80); family practice doctors ($65.80); podiatrists ($61.70); lawyers ($59.60); psychiatrists ($58) and air-traffic controllers ($43.10).
Workforce Services economist Austin Sargent said the high wages paid to health-care workers reflect not only the high cost of attaining a complex set of skills, but also the rising cost of delivering health care, including malpractice insurance coverage.
Although he is not delivering babies or performing many risky procedures, Ogden podiatrist Lorell Fawson said his malpractice insurance premiums rose by one-fifth last year.
"It just keeps going up, and there's nothing that you can do about it," he said.
Jobs that require the least amount of education or training dominate the list of lowest-paid professions.
They include ushers, who average $6.70 an hour, followed by fast-food cooks ($6.90); dining-room attendants, dishwashers, and amusement and recreation attendants, all of whom average $7 an hour.
The hourly wages compiled do not include benefits such as health care or retirement plans.
