CODY, Wyo. (AP) - A kayaker drowned Saturday after falling into the Yellowstone River, the Park County sheriff's department said.

Authorities have not released the victim's name. He drowned in the Clarks Fork of the river about 70 miles northwest of Cody, the sheriff's office said.

He was in his 30s and a veteran kayaker in that part of the river, authorities said.

Park County Deputy Sheriff Dan Estes said another kayaker was with the man and called for help shortly before 4 p.m. A Shoshone National Forest employee later pulled the victim from the river.

Rescuers tried to resuscitate the man, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. An ambulance arrived from Cody after weather prevented the arrival of an aerial ambulance from Billings, Mont.

Estes said he did not know why the man fell out of his kayak or whether he struck his head on rocks as he drifted downstream.
