Some boots were made for walking, but the Wyoming FFA Association state president logged his miles at the Wyoming State Fair in dress shoes.

Caitlin Caines of Hyattville strapped on a pedometer following a request to see how much people walked at the Wyoming State Fair and Rodeo in Douglas. On Tuesday, Aug. 11, Caines logged 16,842 steps. At a 30-inch stride, that's about 2,112 steps per mile or 8 miles total, according to a footsteps-to-miles chart from the WIN the Rockies project (www.uwyo.edu/wintherockies). If he has a 33-inch stride, it takes about 1,920 steps per mile. Caines would have walked more than 8-1/2 miles.

His footsteps per day were: Monday, 7,563 (half day wearing pedometer), Tuesday, 16,842, Wednesday, 0 (forgot to wear pedometer), Thursday, 11,947, Friday, 12,079, and Saturday, 12,027.

As an FFA state officer, his responsibilities included helping care for any animals of FFA members, hosting showmanship and jackpots and assisting animal superintendents.

"Tuesday was by far my busiest day," said Caines, a 2009 graduate of Riverside High School in Basin. "I hosted at least two shows and had office duty as well as assisted some friends in showing their animals. I was all over the grounds, from animal pens to dorms to the office to the midway to the show rings."

He added, "My feet were sore. My official dress shoes were not distance-walker friendly."

Caines is a freshman majoring in microbiology at the University of Wyoming College of Agriculture and is the son of Philip and Cathy Caines.
