LARAMIE (AP) - The owners of the dilapidated, nearly century-old Fox Theater say it's time to focus on stabilizing and cleaning up the building.

The Laramie Community Redevelopment Foundation Inc., which owns the building, has been working with a community group, Friends of the Fox, to try to find a future for the building.

"They have a dream. Their dream is pretty clear. They would like to see the property converted to a community resource," Phil Nicholas, a Laramie Community Redevelopment Foundation founder, said of Friends of the Fox.

But Friends of the Fox hasn't found money to renovate the building. Nicholas said that after two years of efforts, the focus needs to turn to stabilization and cleanup.

"Now we're under the next stage," he said. "Our objective now is to get a study and find out what's it going to cost to get it stabilized."

Nicholas said the goal is "to do something other than level it or raze it."

According to a 2002 study, 40 percent of the building's roof was gone and pigeons had nested inside, leaving several feet of droppings.

"The real concern is, is the Fox Theater creating any health hazards?" said Dan Furphy, also a founder of the Laramie Community Redevelopment Foundation.

"We really don't understand the extent of the contamination," he said. "Is it an environmental hazard? Is it also a safety hazard with the condition the building is in?"

Furphy said the organization would like to find out what in the building is salvageable and what salvaging the building would entail.
