LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - The City Council heard sometimes vitriolic opposition Tuesday night to a proposed nuisance ordinance.

The ordinance would make it a crime to keep unsightly objects - broken down cars, old appliances, even tree branches and weeds - in public view in the front yard.

People would be given 10 days to clean up after a complaint; after that, the city could haul away nuisance items and the violator would be charged.

The measure got preliminary approval from the council two weeks ago.

Burt Davis called the law "draconian," particularly a clause that would allow police to enter a violator's property.

Bob Townsend said, "It reminds me of Hitler's Germany."

Davis also said there were better ways to encourage people to clean up their property.

"Rather than being antagonistic and having people feel that the City Council is forcing them to do things, we could possibly get together in a spirit of community cooperation and get the problem solved," he said.

The council will consider the ordinance again next month.
