WALLACE, Idaho (AP) - A northern Idaho man who raped and stabbed his 12-year-old daughter and left her for dead has been sentenced to two life prison terms without parole.
John Rollins Tuggle, 37, deserves credit for pleading guilty to rape and kidnapping with a deadly weapon, taking responsibility and sparing the victim from the ordeal of a trial, First District Judge Fred Gibler said Monday.
"Other than those two things, its hard to find anything positive to state about Mr. Tuggle," Gibler said.
Tuggle's daughter, who has changed her last name, looked directly at him as she read a letter to him in court, saying she was determined to overcome the loss of her innocence.
"You left me to die and for that you do not deserve life," she said. "I will remove your actions from my mind, as I've already removed you from my heart."
Tuggle visited his former wife and children in Athol last July after completing a nine-year prison term for the rape of his ex-wife's sister, Crystal Teupel, 13 at the time, who became pregnant from the attack. Teupel and her sister, Terri Teupel, also attended the sentencing.
"To me, you are more monster than human," Terri Teupel said. "We are going to live as though you never existed."
Tuggle's ex-wife, to whom he had written while in prison to plead for reconciliation, allowed him supervised visitation for two days, and that went so well that she agreed to let him spend time alone with their daughter on July 20, Shoshone County Prosecuting Attorney Michael F. Peacock said.
Tuggle took the girl into the woods north of Pitchard, tied her up under the pretext of showing her how to play a prank on her brother, then raped her at knifepoint after she got her feet untied, Peacock said.
He then led her up a trail , stabbed her in the throat, breast and abdomen, then cut the ropes from her hands and sat and smoked two cigarettes as she lay bleeding.
Hours later, a family looking for a campsite heard the girl crying for help. After a week of hiding in the woods, Tuggle was recognized and arrested when he wandered into Wallace looking for food.
