Some bikers arrive early
CODY - As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, the Hells Angels who'd pulled soot-black or custom-painted Harleys in front of Cody Custom Cycle on 12th Street had not yet made it across the way to the coffee shop with the "Welcome Bikers" sign in the window.
"Hell, yeah!" Beta Coffeehouse co-owner Mike Snyder said when asked if he wanted to see the black-vested crew stop by for a pick-me-up. "We're no Robin's Nest."
That's the bed-and-breakfast in town that decided to close down during the Hells Angels World Run, which, with about 1,500 members expected in town, begins today.
That didn't stop many members from showing early. Some of them cruised down the main stretch of Sheridan Avenue on Tuesday, jockeying for position with police cars (lots of them) and minivans.
And with Hells Angels, some of whom arrived as early as Saturday, come the dollars.
In an effort to further remind members that they are welcome, Gail Nace, owner of the Silver Dollar bar, bought a back-page ad in an entertainment publication. It listed the top five reasons why Angels love the Silver Dollar: Burgers, beer and "no rap music … EVER!" made the list.
Nace said a good number of Hells Angels partied Monday night, with no incident. She said it's like the Fourth of July all over again. All her liquor and beer distributors are on call for the week.
Examples of this week's uniqueness permeated standard summer Cody tourism. Fliers solicited bikers to sign up for a bull riding competition in the Cody Nite Rodeo. State Division of Criminal Investigation officers stood behind an Arizona club member as he awaited the start of the Cody Gunfighters re-enactment.
And customers kept coming into Beta to tell Snyder of their own little encounters with the bikers. Still, no Hells Angels stopped by.
He relayed the news to Kathy Redish, co-owner of Cody Custom Cycle, when she walked over to Beta Tuesday afternoon.
"We'll change that," she promised.
