A Utah man is in custody in connection with the robbery of a Wells Fargo Bank branch in Jackson on June 22, according to federal court records.
Prosecutors say Patrick Clare Stigen walked into the bank at 112 N. Center St., handed a teller a grocery bag and told her to fill it with cash. Another teller also helped fill the bag with cash, according to an affidavit by an FBI agent.
Witnesses saw Stigen run in an alley near the bank, taking off his clothes and dropping cash, and entering a silver Grande Am car. Jackson police officers located the car and took the witnesses to it. The witnesses identified Stigen, who was taken into custody, according to the affidavit.
After being advised of his rights, he told police officers he had entered the bank and asked the teller to fill the bag with cash, according to the affidavit.
"After the robbery, Stigen said he scraped residue from his 'pot pipe' and took one hit to try and settle his nerves," according to the affidavit.
"Stigen said the reason he robbed the bank was because he was, 'hurting in a lot of ways,'" according to the affidavit. "He had no money and he could not find a job. He was in the process of getting his second divorce in less than two years. His car payment was due today and he was living with friends and did not have money to pay them."
U.S. attorney's office spokesman John Powell said Wednesday the federal government will drop its prosecution of Stigen because the local prosecutor will handle the case.
