Wyo braces for winter storm

CHEYENNE - Just a week after a blizzard cut across southeast Wyoming, killing one woman and bringing interstate highway traffic to a standstill, the area was bracing for what forecasters said would be another significant storm.

Steve Rubin, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, said Thursday that snow accumulations of up to a foot were likely around Cheyenne with perhaps more in the mountains. He said between 4 to 9 inches were likely in Rawlins.

"This storm will get quite a bit of snow, but it won't be quite as much wind as the last storm," Rubin said. Last week's blizzard packed wind gusts of over 50 mph.

The leading edge of the new storm was moving through New Mexico and Colorado on Thursday, Rubin said.

If predictions for significant snowfall in southeast Wyoming prove true, Rubin said the storm could push December 2006 into the record books as the snowiest December on record in this part of the state.

"Right now, our total snowfall for December, including today, is 17.1 inches at the National Weather Service at the airport," Rubin said.

"Our all-time snowiest December was 1913, when we had 21.4 inches," Rubin said. "Right now we're only 4.3 inches below that. This storm looks like we're going to get at least that much snow…"

In terms of water content, Rubin said, Cheyenne had received 1.19 inches of moisture so far this December. The record wettest month was also in 1913, when the city received 2 inches.

Unlike last week's storm, the new one was expected to hit a broader area than just the southeast corner. Snow depths through today are expected to range from an inch or so in western Wyoming to as much as 7 inches in Casper and 8 inches in Gillette.
