CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Overnight snowfall from the storm that hit southeastern Wyoming Thursday night and Friday morning has helped to set a record in Cheyenne.
Steve Rubin, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, said Friday that the storm delivered 6.9 inches of snow at the weather service office, near the Cheyenne airport.
Combined with 17.1 inches of snow that had fallen previously at the site so far in December, the snowfall for the month now stands at 24 inches, Rubin said. That exceeds the record of 21.4 inches set in December 1913.
"It's good for the soil moisture and the lawns, but inconvenient for travelers," Rubin said of the snow.
State government offices in Cheyenne were on a two-hour delay Friday morning. Streets in Cheyenne were snow-packed and icy.
Portions of Interstate 25 between Cheyenne and Wheatland remained closed at about 9:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
Kelly Ruiz, spokeswoman for the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security, said there had been no reports of major problems associated with the storm.
Rubin says the bulk of the storm was moving through central New Mexico Friday morning and said it is expected to continue moving east. He said heavy snows are expected over the weekend in eastern Colorado and areas of Nebraska.
Colorado Gov. Bill Owens declared a statewide disaster emergency and state officials urged residents to remain home.
Operations were still running at Denver International Airport Friday morning, but many flights had been canceled. Officials reported that four of the airport's six runway were open and roads to the airport are clear. Last week's blizzard stranded thousands of Christmas travelers at the Denver airport.
