50 cattle killed in semi crash
MURPHY, Idaho (AP) - Law enforcement officials in Owyhee County say about 50 head of cattle are dead after a semi-truck carrying more than 100 cattle crashed.
KTVB television in Boise reports that the crash happened Friday near Murphy's Hot Springs, not far from the Idaho-Nevada border.
Owyhee County Sheriff Gary Aman told the station that the semi driver was stopped on the edge of the road when the road gave way, causing the truck to overturn and land in the East Fork of the Jarbidge River.
Aman says residents in the region tried to help save all the cattle they could, but half the animals died. No humans were injured in the wreck.
The Idaho Hazardous Materials team, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, the Elko County sheriff's office and the Twin Falls County sheriff's office all responded to the crash after an estimated 140 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the river.
Aman says the crash was ruled an accident.
