GILLETTE (AP) - A soldier from Gillette is recovering in a German hospital after being wounded in Iraq, his family said.

Staff Sgt. Derick Goodrich, 21, of the U.S. Army's 4th Division was shot in the lower back and hip, possibly from sniper fire, his family said.

An official from the military hospital at Ramstein Air Base in Germany called the soldier's grandfather, Carroll Martin, at about 3 p.m. Monday and told him that Goodrich has been shot. But the caller didn't have many details.

"We don't know if he's paralyzed, we don't know anything. We do know it's going to take a lot of rehab," said Beth Martin, Goodrich's aunt and Carroll Martin's daughter.

The Martins don't know exactly what Goodrich had been doing when he was shot, but it may have been clearing a building in an Iraqi city, possibly Tikrit.

Goodrich called briefly to say he felt OK and was not in any pain, but he was groggy because of his medication. He is expected to undergo surgery.

Doctors may have to remove a portion of his tailbone, Carroll Martin said.

When Goodrich is stabilized, he will be moved to the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., but the Martins have no idea when that might be.

The family was always worried, but did not expect to get such a call now after major combat missions in Iraq have ended.

Goodrich was deployed to Iraq about two months ago from Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo. Goodrich's twin brother, Pvt. Kyle Goodrich, is a Marine who has been in Iraq for six months.

"We don't even know if Kyle knows his twin brother has been shot," Beth Martin said.

Derick and Kyle grew up in Gillette and graduated from Campbell County High School in 1999.
