ROCK SPRINGS (AP) - Western Wyoming Community College's trustees are questioning whether to allow the expansion of a campus art exhibit because two of the new pieces contain nudity.

Five paintings, each showing images of famous cave art, already hang in the hallway of the archaeology department. Darryl Newton, the painter, would like to hang seven more.

But trustees expressed concern last week when they saw that one of the pictures showed a large nude woman - a traditional image of health, prosperity and abundance, Newton said - and another showed either a man dressed as a stag or a half-man, half-elk creature with its genitals exposed.

The trustees said schoolchildren often come through the hallway while viewing dinosaur fossils.

"I couldn't approve it unless I heard from someone like an elementary curriculum coordinator telling me that that was appropriate curriculum for elementary-age children," trustee Dick Boettcher said.

Newton said he was in no hurry to hang the new pieces, but that he wouldn't expand the exhibit unless all seven new paintings were included.

"It will be in that series, whether here or someplace else," Newton said.

The trustees planned to discuss the exhibit again at their next meeting.
