Police search for armed man

ROCK SPRINGS - Desert View Elementary School was locked down for about 1.5 hours after a report of a man who was pointing a gun at his own head on Tuesday morning, according to a news release from the Rock Springs Police Department.

A citizen reported seeing the man in an older model two-tone gray Chevrolet pickup with a faded white-to-orange colored strip and a tinted area near the top of the windshield.

The man was described as white, between 20 and 30 years old with short, sandy blond hair, no facial hair and no eyeglasses.

The vehicle was reported traveling west on Oak Way and south on Century Boulevard.

Officers from the police department and deputies from the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office saturated the area, but the vehicle was not located.

City might send trash to Colorado

CHEYENNE - The city of Cheyenne is considering sending municipal trash south for disposal at a landfill in Ault, Colo.

Cheyenne's Finance Committee voted 2-1 on Monday to approve a five-year contract with Waste Management Disposal Services of Colorado.

Cheyenne Public Works Manager Mike Abel says the deal would amount to about $4.8 million over the life of the contract. It calls for Cheyenne to pay $395 for each trailer load of trash disposed of in the landfill, west of Fort Collins.

The city's existing landfill on Happy Jack Road is about four years away from reaching capacity. The full City Council is scheduled to consider the contract at its May 26 meeting.

Gas flows through new pipeline

DENVER - A 713-mile pipeline carrying natural gas from Wyoming is up and running. It's the first phase of the Rockies Express pipeline operation that ultimately will deliver natural gas from the West to the East Coast.

The pipeline runs from Colorado to Missouri. Officials with the Rockies Express or REX pipeline said Tuesday the completion of the first phase boosts capacity to 1.5 billion cubic feet per day.

The next phase is a 638-mile pipeline segment extending from Missouri to Clarington, Ohio. The entire project is expected to be fully operational by June 2009 if the builders obtain all regulatory approvals.

The pipeline is a joint venture of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP, Sempra Pipelines and Storage and ConocoPhillips.

Snow keeps campgrounds closed

CHEYENNE - Lingering snow will continue to keep many campgrounds on the Medicine Bow National Forest and the Laramie Peak Unit closed over Memorial Day weekend.

U.S. Forest Service officials say that camping will be possible at unimproved sites at lower elevations in many areas. But they say many of the established public campgrounds will remain closed.

The agency also says dead trees pose a hazard at many campgrounds in the area. The campgrounds won't open until crews can remove the dead trees.

The Forest Service says people should check with their local ranger districts to find out whether particular campgrounds are open.
