Officials probe shooting death

LARAMIE - The Albany County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting death of a 34-year-old man.

Police say they received a report Sunday evening of a man dead in his trailer home about seven miles west of Laramie.

They found the body of Carlos Guzman-Luna, who had multiple gunshot wounds. Police say the victim was originally from Mexico.

An autopsy was done, but results were not immediately made available.

Arrests include teacher's aide

CHEYENNE - A second elementary school classroom employee faces federal drug charges stemming from an investigation into a cocaine ring.

Mary C. Dunning, 47, is charged with two misdemeanor counts of attempting to possess cocaine. Dunning is an elementary school teacher's assistant.

She is one of two Laramie County School District 1 employees among the 13 Cheyenne-area residents arrested last week on federal warrants.

A sixth-grade teacher, Irena F. Mondello, 41, is charged with two counts each of lying to federal investigators and attempting to possess cocaine.

Dunning works full time helping a teacher with about 10 special education students, said John Lyttle, assistant superintendent of human resources for the district. Both Dunning and Mondello have been suspended with pay pending the outcome of their charges.

Dunning's attorney, Sean Barrett, said people should not jump to conclusions about her guilt because she has not been able to tell her side of the story.

Dunning posted $5,000 bail following a detention hearing last week.

Agency captures, tests more elk

BOULDER - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department was successful at a second elk trapping session at the Muddy Creek elk feedground near Boulder Monday, catching 158 animals.

Agency brucellosis information specialist Christopher Colligan reported that of the 158 animals trapped, 41 were females that were processed for brucellosis testing. In addition, one cow elk that had escaped the elk trap earlier in the month, and had tested positive for exposure to the disease, was also recaptured.

Of the 41 new elk tested for brucellosis, six of the animals tested positive. A total of seven cow elk were transported to an eastern Idaho facility for slaughter Tuesday morning, according to Colligan.

This is the third year of the elk test-and-removal pilot project for the Pinedale elk herd. Elk on each of two feedgrounds are trapped and tested for brucellosis, a highly contagious disease of the reproductive tract.

Colligan noted that state wildlife officials also still plan a second capture effort at the Fall Creek feedground this week.

Cody student has meningitis

CODY - A Cody High School student is being treated for bacterial meningitis.

Park County public health officer Dr. Charles Jamieson of Cody said the student was flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City for treatment.

The bacterial infection causes inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and the spinal cord. Untreated, it can be fatal.
