Gusts reach 127 mph in Park County, 86 mph in southeast ahead of fast-moving cold front
Wind gusts reached 127 mph in northern Wyoming late Monday and tipped over trucks on Interstate 80 Tuesday in advance of a cold front that brought an end to relatively balmy conditions in Wyoming.
The fast-moving front was expected to knock down temperatures by about 20 degrees today but leave only minimal amounts of snow at lower elevations. Winds were expected to die down by this morning.
The top wind speed of 127 mph was reported at about 9:30 p.m. Monday near Dead Indian Pass northwest of Cody, the National Weather Service office in Riverton said.
"The Absarokas are a notoriously windy area, but that is windy even for them," meteorologist Bill Murrell said.
A wind gust of 84 mph was reported at Arlington at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. An 86 mph gust was reported south of Wheatland at 4 a.m., according to the NWS office in Cheyenne. An observation site west of Buffalo recorded gusts up to 91 mph.
The weather service also recorded wind gusts of 74 mph in Casper and 59 mph at Natrona County International Airport.
"This is even unusual for the Casper area," Murrell said,
High winds tipped over three semitrailers and two pickups with trailers between Laramie and Rawlins on I-80 Tuesday. A sixth tractor trailer succumbed to the winds on State Highway 85, the Highway Patrol said.
Injuries were reported in the crashes, and victims were transported to hospitals. Details were not available Tuesday evening.
Aaron Rodolph, owner of Rodolph Brothers Lawn Co. in Casper, said he received three calls from Casperites with wind-blown trees Tuesday.
"The wind blows here all the time, so the trees are pretty accustomed to the wind," Rodolph said. "Apparently the gusts we got were more than normal."
One tree fell on a Casper man's house, and another broke a root system, splitting the tree. Rodolph said the strong wind on Tuesday made immediate tree removal impossible.
