CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - A routine traffic stop resulted in police seizing more than 70 pounds of cocaine with a street value of $3.2 million in a semitrailer, the Highway Patrol said.
The stop was made about 7 p.m. Thursday 25 miles west of Cheyenne on Interstate 80 when a trooper spotted a tire violation, according to the patrol.
The semitrailer was driven by Ramon Rojas, 35, of Tualatin, Ore., the patrol said in a news release. He was with a female companion and five children, ranging in age from 18 months to 14.
It wasn't immediately clear who the children belong to, patrol Sgt. Steve Townsend said. The children were taken to temporary foster care, according to a news release.
Rojas and the female, Olga Ibarra-Cruz, of Boardman, Ore., made their initial appearances Friday morning before Laramie County Circuit Judge Denise Nau.
Rojas was charged with felony possession of cocaine with intent to distribute it and felony possession of cocaine. Ibarra-Cruz is charged with felony possession of cocaine.
Nau set bond at $250,000 cash for both.
The case likely will be pursued in federal court, according to prosecutors.
The semitrailer was hauling a load of onions and had begun its trip in Quincy, Wash. Troopers say the semitrailer was destined for Atlanta.
