GILLETTE (AP) - The mother of a teen shot to death in his bedroom pointed the finger at a man on trial for the killing during the 911 call in which she reported her son's death.
Prosecutors played the 911 recording for jurors Monday as testimony began in the trial of Kent Proffit Sr., 43, on a charge of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, a crime punishable by death.
Proffit is accused of arranging the death of Bryce Chavers, 16, because the teen was about to testify against Proffit in a sexual assault trial. Chavers was shot in the head at his home on Nov. 26, 2005.
Tammy Porter, Chavers' mother, told dispatchers just minutes into the 911 call that she believed Proffit was responsible for killing her son because Chavers was scheduled to testify at Proffit's third-degree sexual assault trial on Nov. 28, 2005.
"You think he hurt him?" the dispatcher answered.
"Yes," Porter responded.
Opening arguments in Proffit's trial began Monday afternoon after a jury of five women and nine men was selected.
The defense's opening statements were nearly identical to arguments made without success in previous trials in the case: The only evidence against Proffit is the testimony of people who themselves participated in the killing and who have admitted lying in court in the past.
"You're going to hear the real motive for killing Bryce Chavers was the drug-induced craziness of (his co-defendants)," defense attorney Craig Abraham told jurors.
The trial is scheduled to last until April 13.
