MORRISON, Colo. - Monday's concert was the second of five shows at Red Rocks this week by The Dead - made up of four surviving members of the Grateful Dead, plus four extra musicians. The shows are part of a cross-country summer tour that kicked off last month. Three of the shows in the nearly 10,000-seat venue have sold out so far.
While this year's contingent of about 800 camping Deadheads is large, Bill Fuchs, manager of the nearby Chief Hosa Campground, said it isn't anything close to the 3,000 concert followers who have packed into Hosa in the past.
Some fans said their numbers would grow later in the week, as many Deadheads attended the annual Rainbow Gathering, held last week in Utah's Wasatch-Cache National Forest.
Dreadlocked fans chatted outside their tents and campers, with Grateful Dead tunes wafting out from car stereo speakers competing against notes plucked from the occasional live mandolin.
Olfactory attention was divided among the smells of griddle-cooked pancakes, bacon and eggs; homemade veggie burritos; grilled hot dogs and hamburgers; and a cloud of marijuana smoke. Tickets were bought, sold and traded everywhere.
