West Nile cases down

Seven human cases of West Nile virus have been reported to the Wyoming Department of Health this year, indicating a slower rate of infection across the state compared to the previous season, according to a release from the department.

Five cases have been reported among Fremont County residents, and one each from Goshen and Platte counties. There have been three males and four females; all have been adults.

WNV is spread by mosquitoes after they feed on infected birds and then bite people, other birds and animals.

In 2007, 184 WNV human cases and one death were reported in Wyoming.
