Liz Cheney dropped out of the Senate primary race against Sen. Mike Enzi today because of family health issues, according to a campaign spokeswoman.

News of Cheney's decision broke late Sunday night in a handful of media reports, including the Casper Star-Tribune's on trib.com. Today's official announcement in a 3:54 a.m. media release from the Cheney campaign came less than six months after the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney announced she was running to unseat the three-term senator to represent Wyoming in Congress.

“Serious health issues have recently arisen in our family, and under the circumstances, I have decided to discontinue my campaign," Cheney said in the prepared statement. "My children and their futures were the motivation for our campaign and their health and well-being will always be my overriding priority.”

One of Cheney’s five children has type 1 diabetes, according to Cheney campaign spokeswoman Kara Ahern. Cheney recently canceled campaign events including one last month in Uinta County.

Cheney’s Senate run sparked controversy among the GOP ranks in Wyoming and forced conservatives to choose between an establishment-backed senator in Enzi and the daughter of the former vice president.

“The Wyoming Republican Party wishes the best to Liz Cheney and her family as they deal with difficult family health issues,” Tammy Hooper, chairman of the Wyoming Republican Party, said in a media release. “Liz has been a stalwart supporter of our party, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for our candidates and county parties.”

Cheney’s announcement to run against Enzi sparked a feud between her family and former Wyoming Sen. Al Simpson.

Simpson and the former vice president worked and campaigned in national politics in the 1970s and 1980s, but when Simpson began stumping for Enzi it caused a blowup between the two families.

But in the wake of Cheney’s announcement, the two families will begin to rebuild their longtime friendship, Simpson said.

“It was a beautiful friendship and I am sure it will be restored,” he said.

Simpson spoke to Cheney on Monday. She told the former Senator she was dropping out because it was a “mom thing.”

Cheney’s premature departure from the campaign has many people wondering whether she will one day reappear in Wyoming politics.

The future looks very good for her, state Rep. and GOP national committeewoman Marti Halverson said.

“I hope we haven’t heard the last of her,” she said.

Cheney's decision to end her campaign leaves Enzi without a formidable challenger with eight months remaining until the Wyoming Republican primary election.

"We have tremendous respect for Liz’s decision," Enzi said in a media release. "She and her entire family are in our thoughts and prayers."

yeah commenters, let's criticize her when she's dealing with a health issue for her children. .....shows the utter lack of character of several commenters here.

Well, the choice of Candidates was short lived in Wyoming.
Conservatives can either stay home or try stomaching the "internet tax-man Enzi", for another term. Because the special interests have chocked this nation to death, along with this nation's greatness.

Reads like a play for sympathy and a regrouping for time and money. Does the Superpac refund the donors? At least a few temporary jobs were created for the advertising tv commercial whiz kids bashing Enzi. And of course Liz and Phil will do all the irrigating and baling this summer now that they're back on the ranch. ddric

PLEASE stop posting as a Christian. It really does add to those who find Christians to be hypocritical. It's not becoming of a Christian nature. All of us sin, we just don't blatantly pronounce Christianity while doing so. I'm more offended with your name while criticizing than any other comments on here. If you are truly a Christian you would reconsider how you make your religion look to outsiders.

I'm sorry to hear this. I have nothing against Enzi, I just think that no politician should be allowed more than 12 years, no matter how good or bad. Term limits and eliminating lobbyists would go a long way to cleaning up the mess in Washington.

Oh poor me…I’m dropping out for health issues because I’m actually getting my non-resident rear-end kicked by a local guy! Oh well never did like Jackson CA, CO, PA anyway. Now she won’t have to pretend that she is from Wyoming and can sell the house. Actually wait a little longer and the state will sell it for back taxes. Hunting license…who needs one!

For those of us who enjoy political theatre, I am sad that she dropped out. In truth though, I pose this question. How many times would have Enzi and Cheney voted differently? Less than a handful over the course of a senate term is my guess.

Sorry to hear this. A fresh mind and face would have been a plus. Some new blood so to speak. Now back to the good ol boys club and internet purchases tax. Wow Enzi really has worked hard for Wyoming! More taxes!

what really concerns me now is, what will Deb Oakley Simpson (Al Simpson's daughter in law) do now? Deb was nothing less then obsessed with the Cheney campaign and monited Liz like a buzzard circling roadkill. Will Deb have a life now that Liz has pulled out or will she go into a deep withdraw?

Wyopoke
Wyopoke

That was a cheap shot! I know Deb personally and she is the type of person that does everything 100%. If she is in the Liz camp she's in 100%.

Deb is a great lady, and I do mean LADY, a wonderful mother, devoted wife and a lifelong COWGIRL. If she has twisted your tail somehow have the courage to address the issue in person rather than sniping from the quiet anonymous comfort of the trib comment section.

I agree Sassy. While I couldn't force myself to vote for Cheney giving Enzi a free ride isn't a good thing. You have to ask what has he done in the last 6 years; sponsor a bill to enforce the internet sales tax, and the one cent tax bill. Neither bill saw the light of day. He voted for sequestor and for keeping the govt. from working both opposed by the majority of WY voters. He needs to be held accountable and Cheney could have done that.

Really? And you do? Try reading the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

christian 23

Take a civics lesson. The Constitution and Bill of Rights only address the authority of and limitations on our Federal Government -- and through the 14th Amendment, certain limitations on the states and local govs. Under Constitutional law, no government in the U.S. can establish a state religion, make laws preventing the free exercise of religion by U.S,. citizens, or infringe on freedom of speech.

I am not the government, Salty Dawg. I am a Wyoming citizen saying that the celebratory comments about the health problem in Liz Cheney's family are amoral and indefinsible. No decent human being of any religion would say such things at this time.

She never said the "family health issues" were her kids. She simply mentioned the issues,
and kids in the same statement.
Perhaps, the health issues, may have been homesickness for the beltway, sick of Wyoming,
family sick of betrayal, fear of losing....

Liz Cheney's decision to run against Enzi was poor and ill-advised one from the beginning. Too bad because it has injured any future political opportunities for her. It is what it is.

It begs the question, why are liberals so full of hate at the mere mention of any prominent republican? Are they just naturally hateful so they become liberals, or is it that liberals by nature are hateful? I have never met a happy liberal and I have met many.

99, your simplistic and stereotypical comments begs the question, why are conservatives so lacking in intelligence and critical thinking skills? Are they just naturally stupid so they become conservatives, or is it that conservatives by nature are stupid? I have never met an intelligent conservative and I have met many.
And if you were paying attention you would have noticed that a lot of the comments against Liz Cheney are from conservatives, not liberals.

Whatever, so is it worse to be hateful or stupid?

There are some stupid/hateful conservatives and socialists. There are some loving/smart conservatives and socialists. There are some stupid/loving conservatives and socialists. There are some smart/hateful conservatives and socialists.

Let's all hope the stupid/hateful group just stays mainly in Washington D.C. and out of Wyoming.

Politics is a dirty business. When one decides to run, it is with the knowledge, that your principles will be compromised. The game is rampant with deceit and subterfuge at every turn. It's really a race for approval of the voting public. We all know the voting public is emotionally unstable. Wyoming is one of the red states that considers itself a sovereign nation answering to no one in the national power structure. Honesty is a virtue politicians have lost sight of.

I had no feeling one way or the other, i think we all need to stop with our opinions and get up off our rears and run for offices on every level in wyoming, weather city, county or state. Were being taxed and sold out by all involved weather its energy needs or fossel fules or even local ordinances. We can make a change if we stand together and not be afraid of failure to take an office. But the more that run the less chance the ones we want gone can stay in there and continue to take wyoming down.

The REAL reason that she dropped out was that polling numbers were Enzi in irst place; YO was is second place; Liz was in third place.

Let's see how long she and her family stick around. If their real home is Wyoming, and they love it as much as she claims, they will maintain permanent residency here. If they bolt for the beltway, we will all know where her heart really lies.
