GILLETTE — 5 to 10 barrels of oil spilled from a tanker about 6 miles south of Wright — something Lt. Will Zilka with the Wyoming Highway Patrol said could have been much worse.
A semitrailer hauling double empty tanks was slowing to make a left turn off Highway 450 about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Another single tanker truck was behind it when the 57-year-old driver got distracted, then looked up to see that the truck in front was slowing to make a turn, Zilka said.
The driver tried to stop and couldn’t in time, so he tried to pass the first truck on the left-hand side.
The second truck was half loaded with crude oil, which sloshed in the tank when the driver made the sharp turn to avoid a crash, Zilka said. As it sloshed back and forth, it caused the semi to whip and then overturn onto its right side.
