May is Mothers' Day, when we take a special moment to think of all that mothers mean to us and to honor them for all they do.
And yet remember motherhood is not all about flowers and dinner out. Every minute, ten mothers around the world lose a child under age 5 to preventable causes like disease and malnutrition.
That simply does not need to happen!
The Reach Every Mother and Child Act (REACH) can help pave the way for an end to preventable maternal and child deaths by 2035. Really! This bill is designed to give our government flexibility in partnerships with other governments and non-governmental organizations for more effective action. Importantly, the bill sets standards and mechanisms for accountability in the use of our tax dollars, ensuring they go to their intended purpose instead of into some corrupt official's pocket.
Over 130 members of the House and Senate from both sides of the aisle have signed as co-sponsors of this act. Our own Senator Enzi is an original co-sponsor of the bill. This is the perfect time to encourage Sen. Barrasso and Rep. Cheney to sign on, too. All three of our delegation should encourage their leaders to move this bill forward for action.
In honor of mothers around the world, write phone, or email in support of S.1730 and H.R. 4022.
