I read with interest the recent article “The effect of the boom” by Katie King. It was a good story about the A&W restaurant which had been on CY Avenue for 50 years. When I came to Casper in 1974, the A&W run by Bob Sheppard was probably the best fast food restaurant on the west side of Casper.
The boom in downtown had nothing to do with the decline of the restaurant. Unfortunately, about six or seven years ago the service and quality of the food at this location deteriorated significantly. I believe the change to Shifters was because the new manager could not maintain the high standards required by the A&W Corporation. The place was no longer friendly and the high school kids stopped going there for lunch. If you go by Wendy’s, Guadalajara, or J’s Pub and Grill during lunch or dinner, the parking lots are always full!
The A&W is a really good location with significant neighborhoods north and south of the location and heavy traffic on CY. I believe if an experienced and aggressive individual took over the building and brought back the A&W franchise, it would be a very profitable business. I would go back there again.
