City Council was wrong to give judges the power to send minors to jail. Jail for juvenile drinkers is a bad idea. That will only teach them to be more discreet when drinking.
A better idea would be to assign them to do public service. This could be by helping to clean trash from roadsides or helping at places like Food for Thought, the ASPCA or the many other organizations that can use volunteers. Doing meaningful work would improve the self-images of these young people. They wouldn't have to drink to give them a false sense of maturity. They would become more mature by helping others.
